5 of the Toughest Game Fish to Catch on Your Next Sportfishing Trip

The waters bordering Cabo San Lucas boast a wide variety of fish, from bonito to marlin to skipjacks to yellowfin tuna. We’re talking about over 20 fish species at any point in time. However, while some are quite easy to catch, others can be a challenge.

We’ve outlined fish found in these waters that need to be on your next fishing trip list.

Roosterfish

Roosterfish, also known as pez gallo, is native to the tropical Pacific region. They are usually found by the shore of the sandy beaches and can grow up to a hundred pounds.

They’re exotic with distinct colors. These species are the most abundant near Cabo. However, they’re selective with their meals so it’s always tough to get them to pounce on your bait. If you’re lucky enough to catch one, you’ll be rewarded with plenty of food for a feast.

Marlin

These are divided into three distinct categories; each of which is available in the region of Pacific Ocean near Cabo.

Marlin

Striped Marlin

These 50 to 300 pound giants—also known as the striped marlin capital—are found in abundance around the waters of Cabo. They’re predators that hunt in the top 100 m during the day, almost always near the surface.

Blue Marlin

These are known to exceed 1500 pounds in weight and known for their migratory nature. They travel through the currents for around a thousand miles offshore. They’re known for their ability to jump high up and dive deep as soon as they feel the hook. That, coupled with their humongous body, makes it tough to get them on board even after they bite. This requires team effort and a lot of strength to accomplish.

Black Marlin

These differ slightly from the other Marlin species with their pectoral fin sticking out and their ability to exceed 1000 pounds. Cabo holds the world record for catching a 1560-pounder. However, they are as tough to catch as the blue ones as they have the same ability to jump quite high and give its anglers an impressive chase.

Yellowfin Tuna

Yellowfin Tuna

Its size ranges from 20 pounds to over 200 pounds. However, only the smaller ones are found near the shore. The bigger ones are usually deeper offshore and are tough to catch because their amazing eyesight and speed protect them from traps. Only the most experienced anglers can score these ones.
