With the temperatures getting warmer and the water temperature rising, it is prime season for tuna fishing in Cabo San Lucas in Mexico.
Cabo San Lucas is one of the best places to enjoy deep sea sport fishing. The waters here are filled with big game catches; anglers can flaunt prized catches such as Big Tuna, Marlin and Mahi Mahi to name a few.
These species, however, are difficult to find close to shore, and require you to go deep within the waters. This experience is heightened when you have a charter to take you all the way and show you the best spots, thus saving you the hassle of driving and searching for the fish yourself. Having the proper fishing essentials and gear is a must to catch big fish.
Big Tuna catching is a sport that requires skill, the best gear and expert handling. The size of these fish can easily overhaul you if not handled with care.
Catching Over 200 lbs. Tunas
Recently, in our regular charter trips to the Baja waters, our clients have had the exquisite exhilaration of catching beautiful, 200 lbs. Tunas.
The waters are just warm enough to bring plenty of fish close to our shores. However, the best and biggest prizes are rarely found close to shore and to get the best experience, one needs to go into the deeper waters and that’s exactly what we did.
We initially went out fishing targeting big Yellowfin tunas. Since our Tag Cabo Sportfishing team had been doing a tremendous job catching tunas—around 25 to 100 lbs.—we had high hopes.
We made our way to the fishing grounds and started setting up our equipment. We were expecting a long wait of a few hours.
It’s never easy to catch large fish; we were expecting a few lines to get taken away and a few fish to get away – if we even found any.
It was a risk all of us were prepared to take. The final result, if we managed to catch what we came here for, would surely make up for all the trouble we would have to go to. And that it did!
We were all prepared for the wait and were taking turns formulating strategies to make the most of our trip and snag a prize-worthy fish.
Little did we know we were in luck that day.
We managed to catch not one, but two large tunas, each weighing in at around 200 lbs.!
With two great, gigantic prizes in hand, exhausted but happy, we got exactly what we needed and set off back to shore with a great meal on deck and joy in our hearts.
On our second trip into the waters a few days later, we found that we were in luck again, and managed to snap down another monster of a tuna, again weighing in at around 200 lbs.
We took turns and battled with the monster for close to three hours! This fish took us by surprise and took the bait when we were still preparing a strategy, nearly running off with it and leaving us hanging. It was only through the quick reflex of our teammates that one of us quickly grabbed hold of the fishing rods, another got all set up on the fighting chair, while the deck hands started reeling in, all prepared not to let this prize get away. For quite a long time, we were afraid we would get spooled in and the huge tuna would get away.
We had quite a time reeling in each of these monsters. We’ve had a number of other successful tuna fishing trips recently and left the waters with a full deck and satisfied clients.
So, if you’re looking to go for some deep-sea fishing in search of yellowfin tuna in Cabo San Lucas, we would suggest you to go for it as soon as possible, as the tuna are now biting – and they’re biting hard!
You must also know the correct fishing spots to find what you need when big sea fishing in Cabo San Lucas. The most common spots to go to are rocks, wrecks and reefs because these provide the perfect hiding spots for fish from the strong sea currents.
Other manmade structures, like navigational aids and towers are also a great spot because fish like to seek refuge within these structures. Possibly the most ideal spots for offshore fishing are submerged hills and sea mounts because sea currents here are diverged and allow various varieties of fish to hide in these structures.
Hiring a charter will not only ensure you find the best possible spots for the fish you aim to catch, it will also mean that you do not have to focus on driving the boat to your fishing location and can focus solely on the sport itself.
Prepping the gear and driving the ride can leave you winded and affect your experience. Always remember to charter for all your fishing excursions at Cabo San Lucas with us.
