The Thrill of Surf Fishing in Cabo San Lucas: The Dance of Roosterfish and Jack Craveils

The Thrill of Surf Fishing in Cabo San Lucas: The Dance of Roosterfish and Jack Craveils

The Dance of Roosterfish and Jack Craveils

Beautiful, pristine, and teeming with life, the Pacific coast of Cabo San Lucas has been a playground for both leisure-seeking tourists and dedicated surf fishermen for years. This paradise, specifically from the sunset beach resort to Migrino beach, is not only visually enchanting, but the waters have also been delivering a unique sportfishing experience that surf anglers crave: the high-octane dance between roosterfish and jack crevalle.

Surf fishing in Cabo San lucas

This summer, the region has been witnessing an even more elevated degree of marine spectacle, owing largely to the bounty brought in by the water temperatures hovering around 80-84 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature range is particularly conducive to the proliferation of chlorophyll. The resulting increase in plant life along these surf breaks has created the perfect environment for a particular species of fish that is central to our story: the mullet.

To help surf fishermen navigate these abundant waters, we highly recommend using SATFISH. This cutting-edge tool offers invaluable insights about the chlorophyll levels in the area, allowing you to track and predict the movement of these mullet schools. With SATFISH, you’ll always be one step ahead, and that can make all the difference between a good day and a great day of fishing. As a bonus for our readers, use the discount code ‘TAGCABO’ to receive a $20 USD discount on your SATFISH subscription.

Mullet schools, vast and dense, have been congregating around these verdant areas. In turn, they have been attracting huge roosterfish and jack crevalle in large numbers, setting the stage for an extraordinary predatory spectacle that has had our fishing lines singing. The mullets, jumping out of the water in synchronized motion, a silver shimmering flurry against the sunlit water, make for a breathtaking spectacle. On some occasions, the chase is so fervent that these large predators pursue their prey to the shoreline, getting beached for a few heart-pounding seconds before they power back into the surf.

Surf fishing in Cabo San lucas

Fishing during these exhilarating moments, with artificial lures, is a thrilling challenge. The roosterfish and jack crevalle are highly discerning predators. Convincing them to strike an artificial lure, in the midst of such an abundance of live bait, demands a perfect blend of skill, patience, and split-second timing. But when the connection is made, the result is a fierce tug-of-war that sets the adrenaline pumping.

Catching these formidable opponents in the midst of their feeding frenzy is not only a testament to one’s fishing prowess, but it is also an immersive experience of nature’s unscripted and raw beauty. As the sun sets over the Pacific Ocean, casting its golden hues over the water, it becomes more than just a fishing trip. It becomes an encounter with the natural world, where the line between observer and participant is blurred.

In Cabo San Lucas, we are fortunate to be a part of these extraordinary surf fishing moments. It’s hard, exciting, and in many ways, it’s addictive. But above all, it’s a reminder of the immense, pulsating life that our oceans hold and the delicate balance they maintain. The roosterfish and jack crevalle may be the stars of this story, but it’s the entire ecosystem, from the chlorophyll-rich waters to the agile mullets, that makes this narrative possible.

Whether you’re a seasoned surf fisherman or a beginner keen on trying your hand at this thrilling sport, come join us in Cabo San Lucas. Experience the thrill of the chase, the joy of the catch, and the unforgettable sight of hundreds of mullets leaping out of the water, as you become part of this incredible Pacific surf fishing adventure.

Here is a must watch video to see how majestic it is when the Mullets get in town !

Using SST Charts to Find the Best Fishing Spots in Cabo San Lucas

Using SST Charts to Find the Best Fishing Spots in Cabo San Lucas

Using SST Charts to Find the Best Fishing Spots in Cabo San Lucas

As the owner of Tag Cabo Sportfishing, I have been using the SatFish app to look at SST charts for years. I have found that SatFish is a valuable tool for anglers in Cabo San Lucas, as it can help you identify areas where fish are likely to be found.

SatFish provides high-definition satellite imagery, real-time sea surface temperature data, and advanced planning tools. This information can help you identify temperature breaks, color breaks, and drop-offs, which are all important factors in finding fish.

Using SST to Find the Best Fishing Spots in Cabo San Lucas

For example, I recently used SatFish to plan a fishing trip for my clients. I was looking for an area with water temperatures between 80 and 87 degrees Fahrenheit, as this is ideal for many of the fish species that are found in Cabo San Lucas. I also wanted to find an area with a temperature break, as this would attract baitfish, which in turn would attract larger game fish, using SATFISH I was able to identify the Santa Maria Canyon as a potential fishing spot. The Santa Maria Canyon is located about 9 miles off the coast of The famous Arch of Cabo San Lucas, and it is known for its deep water and strong currents. These conditions create a temperature break, which attracts baitfish and game fish alike.

I booked my clients on a fishing trip to the Santa Maria Canyon, and we were able to catch a variety of fish, including striped marlin, yellowfin tuna, and dorado. We were all very happy with the results, and we would not have been able to find such a productive fishing spot without looking at water breaks first on our SatFish app.

If you are planning a fishing trip to Cabo San Lucas, be sure to check the SST charts before you go. This will help you identify the best fishing spots and increase your chances of catching a big one!

Here are some tips for using SST charts:

  • Look for areas with water temperatures that are within the preferred range for the fish you are targeting.
  • Identify temperature breaks, which are areas where warm and cool water masses meet.
  • Pay attention to the currents, as they can affect the distribution of fish.
  • Update the charts regularly, as the water temperature can change quickly.

With a little practice, you will be able to use SST charts to identify the best fishing spots in Cabo San Lucas. So get out there and start catching some fish!

Once you have found some promising areas, you can use SatFish to get more detailed information about them, such as the bottom composition, the presence of reefs or wrecks, and the accessibility of the area. This information will help you plan your fishing trip and increase your chances of catching a big one!

The Advantages of Using a Downrigger for Grouper and Snapper Fishing

The Advantages of Using a Downrigger for Grouper and Snapper Fishing

Grouper and snapper are two of the most popular fish to target in saltwater fishing. They are both delicious, and they can be found in a variety of different locations. However, one of the challenges of fishing for grouper and snapper is that they often prefer to stay near the bottom of the water column. This can make it difficult to present your bait or lure at the right depth, especially if you are fishing in a boat that is moving.

A downrigger is a fishing device that can help you solve this problem. A downrigger consists of a weighted weight that is attached to a line that is controlled by a boat. The weight is dropped into the water, and the line is then reeled out until the weight reaches the desired depth. This allows you to keep your bait or lure at a specific depth, regardless of how your boat is moving.

downriggers

There are several advantages to using a downrigger when fishing for grouper and snapper. First, it allows you to present your bait or lure at the exact depth where the fish are located. This is important because grouper and snapper are often very picky eaters, and they will only strike at bait or lures that are presented at the right depth.

Second, a downrigger can help you keep your bait or lure in the strike zone for longer periods of time. This is because the weight of the downrigger will help to keep your bait or lure from drifting up in the water column. This is especially important if you are fishing in a boat that is moving, as the current can quickly carry your bait or lure out of the strike zone.

Third, a downrigger can help you catch more fish. This is because it allows you to fish more effectively in areas where the fish are located. In addition, a downrigger can help you catch larger fish, as it allows you to present your bait or lure at the depth where the big fish are feeding.

Water Temperatures for Grouper and Snapper

The best water temperatures for grouper and snapper fishing vary depending on the species, but they typically prefer water temperatures between 65 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. In general, grouper are more tolerant of cooler water temperatures, while snapper prefer warmer water.

The SATFISH app is a great resource for anglers who are looking to target grouper and snapper. The app provides real-time data on water temperatures, currents, and chlorophyll levels. This information can be used to determine the best locations to fish, as well as the best bait and lures to use.

Tips for Using a Downrigger

  • Use a high-quality downrigger that is designed for saltwater fishing.
  • Make sure that your downrigger is properly rigged and that the weight is the correct size for the depth you are fishing.
  • Use a good quality fishing line that is strong enough to handle the weight of the downrigger and the fish you are targeting.
  • Pay attention to the readings on your fish finder or depth sounder to determine the depth at which the fish are located.
  • Be patient and wait for the fish to strike.

With a little practice, you will be able to use a downrigger to catch more grouper and snapper than ever before. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and start fishing!

fish finders in Cabo San Lucas

Here are some additional tips from Arturo Chacon from Tag Cabo Sportfishing:

  • Use the SATFISH app to check the water currents, temperature, and chlorophyll levels before you go fishing. This will help you determine the best locations to fish.
  • Use live bait when possible. Grouper and snapper are more likely to strike at live bait than at artificial lures.
  • Be patient. It may take some time to get a bite, but it will be worth it when you finally hook a big one!

I hope this blog has helped you learn more about the advantages of using a downrigger for grouper and snapper fishing. Good luck on your next fishing trip!
