Fishing in Quepos Costarica

On your first day, we were able to catch a 19-pound snook, 2 rooster fish ranging from 20 to 30 pounds, 4 snappers, and a few jack crevells, which is an impressive catch. Even better, we were able to share this experience with fellow anglers on 3 different boats, which must have added to the excitement.

ATV Quepos CostaricaThe fourth day was a bit slower with only 2 snappers and a few needlefish. However, this allowed Us to appreciate the scenic views of the shoreline and experience a more relaxed pace of fishing.

Offshore vs. Inshore Fishing in Cabo San Lucas: Which is Right for You?

Offshore vs. Inshore Fishing in Cabo San Lucas: Which is Right for You?

In 2022, Los Cabos welcomed a record-breaking 3.5 million foreign and domestic visitors. Looking ahead to 2023, Rodrigo Sponda, the head of FITURCA (the central Los Cabos Tourism fund), has set a goal of attracting over 4 million tourists to the area.

This target appears achievable, as hotel reservations for the next six months in Cabo are already 10% higher than in 2022.

Cabo San Lucas is a world-renowned destination, attracting avid anglers from all over the world. However, with two distinct fishing experiences available – offshore and inshore – it can take time to decide which is right for you.

Again, deep-sea fishing Cabo San Lucas can be a rewarding and exciting experience for those up for the challenge. Consider the pros and cons and choose a charter meeting your needs and preferences. With the proper preparation and mindset, you will have a successful and memorable cabo san lucas fishing trip in this beautiful destination.

In this blog post, we’ll explore the differences between offshore and inshore fishing in Cabo San Lucas and insights into deep-sea fishing to help you make an informed decision.

Understanding the Differences

Offshore fishing in Cabo San Lucas typically involves traveling several miles offshore to deeper waters. In contrast, inshore fishing is done closer to the shore, typically in waters less than 30 meters deep.

What You Can Catch

Offshore Cabo Fishing provides the opportunity to catch big game fish such as marlin, tuna, and dorado. In contrast, inshore fishing is popular for catching small fish such as snapper, roosterfish, and grouper.

Pros and Cons of Offshore Fishing

Pros:

  • The chance to catch big game fish that are not found in shallow waters
  • A more challenging and adrenaline-fueled experience
  • A more scenic and peaceful atmosphere on the open water

Cons:

  • Longer travel times to get to the fishing grounds
  • Rougher seas and stronger winds
  • More expensive than inshore charters

Pros and Cons of Inshore Fishing

Pros:

  • A wider variety of fish species can be caught
  • A more budget-friendly option compared to offshore fishing
  • Calmer waters, making it an excellent choice for beginners or those prone to seasickness

Cons:

  • Limited to smaller fish species
  • Less of an adrenaline rush compared to offshore fishing
  • The possibility of fishing near crowded areas near the shore

Offshore Fishing: What You Need to Know Before You Go

If you decide to go offshore Cabo fishing, there are a few things to keep in mind before you book your charter:

  • Offshore fishing charters are typically longer than inshore charters, so be prepared to spend an entire day on the water.
  • The ocean can be unpredictable, so listening to your captain’s advice on weather and sea conditions is essential.
  • You’ll need to bring plenty of sunscreens, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun’s rays.

Inshore Fishing: What You Need to Know Before You Go

If you opt for inshore fishing Cabo San Lucas, keep these things in mind:

  • Inshore charters are typically shorter than offshore charters, making them a good option for those with limited time.
  • You’ll be fishing in shallower waters, so you may not need to worry about sea sickness or rough waves.
  • Remember to bring plenty of water and snacks for your trip.

Choosing the Right Fishing Experience for You: Factors to Consider

When deciding between offshore and inshore fishing in San Lucas, there are a few factors to consider:

  • Your level of experience: Offshore fishing may be more challenging, so assessing your fishing skills is essential before you book.
  • Your budget: Inshore charters are less expensive than offshore charters.
  • Your goals: If you want to catch big game fish, offshore fishing may be the better choice.

Combining Best of Both Worlds

If you need help deciding between offshore and inshore fishing, combine the two experiences for the ultimate adventure. Many charters offer a combination of offshore and inshore fishing, allowing you to target various fish species and experience different environments.

Staying up-to-date on the latest Cabo San Lucas fishing report is essential to make the most of your combination fishing trip. This report will give you valuable information on which fish species are in season, the best locations, and any potential weather hazards that could impact your trip.

When booking your fishing charter, communicate your fishing goals and preferences with your captain. Then, they can tailor your experience to meet your needs, whether spending more time offshore targeting big game fish or staying closer to shore for a calmer experience.

The Pros and Cons of Deep-Sea Fishing in Cabo San Lucas

  1. Variety of Fish Species: San Lucas offers a diverse range of fish species to target while deep-sea fishing, including marlin, tuna, dorado, and wahoo.

  3. Beautiful Scenery: Cabo is known for its stunning coastline and crystal-clear waters, providing a picturesque backdrop for your adventure.
  4. Experienced Guides: Many charters Cabo San Lucas have experienced and knowledgeable guides who can help you make the most of your experience. They can provide valuable insight into the best fishing locations, techniques, and equipment.

Cons:

  1. Challenging Conditions: Deep-sea fishing can be physically demanding, as you’ll battle strong currents and potentially rough waters. Preparing for these conditions is essential to avoid seasickness or injuries.
  2. Expensive: Deep-sea charters can be costly, especially if you’re targeting big-game fish. Budget accordingly and consider sharing a charter with friends to split the cost.
  3. Time Commitment: The trips can last several hours or even a full day, so be prepared to dedicate significant time to your fishing adventure.

Overall, deep-sea fishing Cabo San Lucas can be a rewarding and exciting experience for those up for the challenge. Consider the pros and cons and choose a charter meeting your needs and preferences. With the proper preparation and mindset, you will have a successful and memorable deep-sea fishing trip in this beautiful destination.

How To Choose The Right Propellers For Your Outboard Engines

How To Choose The Right Propellers For Your Outboard Engines

How to choose the right propellers for your outboard engines

Choosing the right propeller for your outboard engine is an important decision that can affect the performance, efficiency, and safety of your boat. The ideal propeller size and pitch will depend on a number of factors, including the size and weight of your boat, the type of outboard engine you have, and your intended use for the boat.

Here are some general guidelines for choosing the right propeller for your outboard engine based on your boat size and weight:

  1. Determine your boat’s maximum recommended RPM: Before choosing a propeller, you should determine the maximum recommended RPM for your outboard engine. This information can usually be found in the engine’s manual or by contacting the manufacturer. Once you have this information, you can choose a propeller with the correct pitch to achieve the maximum recommended RPM at full throttle.
  2. Consider your boat’s weight: The weight of your boat is an important factor in selecting the right propeller. A heavier boat will require a larger diameter propeller to provide the necessary thrust, while a lighter boat will require a smaller diameter propeller.
  3. Consider your boat’s size: The size of your boat is also an important factor to consider when selecting a propeller. A larger boat will require a larger diameter propeller to provide the necessary thrust, while a smaller boat will require a smaller diameter propeller.
  4. Determine your intended use for the boat: The intended use for your boat can also affect the choice of propeller. If you plan to use your boat for water sports, such as skiing or wakeboarding, you may want a propeller with a higher pitch to provide more speed and power. For cruising or fishing, a propeller with a lower pitch may be more appropriate.
  5. Consider the number of blades: The number of blades on a propeller can also affect performance. A propeller with fewer blades will generally provide more speed, while a propeller with more blades will provide more power and better acceleration.

Overall, choosing the right propeller for your outboard engine will depend on a variety of factors, including your boat’s size and weight, your intended use for the boat, and the type of outboard engine you have. By considering these factors and consulting with a knowledgeable professional, you can select the ideal propeller for your boat and ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable boating experience.

If you are currently satisfied with the performance of your engine, we recommend to choose the same pitch. However, if you wish to change the performance you can consider a different pitch. For example if your engine currently makes too much or too few RPM (rotations per minute), or if you want to use your boat for a specific purpose (eg. waterskiing).

A good indicator for selecting the optimal pitch is the RPM your engine makes at ´wide open throttle´ (WOT). Each engine has a prescribed ´optimal´ RPM that it should be making at wide open throttle. This differs per engine but often it is between 4500 and 6000. You can check your manual, or check this RPM Range Chart for the most common engines.

If currently your RPM is too high, you may consider a larger pitch that will improve your top speed. If the RPM is too low, the engine is not reaching its full potential because of a too large pitch. In this case choosing a smaller pitch can result in better acceleration (because of the smaller pitch) and higher top speed (now the engine can reach full RPM).

If you’re changing pitch on a recreational boat, remember that each inch of pitch translates to a difference of approximately 200 to 300 rpm. Lowering the pitch will increase rpm and choosing a larger pitch will reduce the rpm. For example, going from a 23 pitch to a 21 pitch will increase engine rpm by about 400 to 600. For smaller horsepower engines (up to 30 hp) this difference is usually bigger: one pitch can already make such a difference.

If you’re looking for websites that can help you choose the right propeller for your outboard engine, here are some options to consider:

  1. Propeller Shop – This website offers a propeller selector tool that allows you to input your boat and engine information to get a list of recommended propellers based on your specific needs.
  2. Turning Point Propellers – Turning Point offers a Prop Wizard tool on their website that helps you select the right propeller based on your boat size, engine horsepower, and intended use.
  3. Mercury Marine – Mercury Marine’s website offers a Prop Selector tool that allows you to input your boat and engine information to get a list of recommended propellers.
  4. Solas Propellers – Solas offers a Prop Finder tool on their website that allows you to input your boat and engine information to get a list of recommended propellers based on your specific needs.
  5. PowerTech Propellers – PowerTech offers a Prop Finder tool on their website that allows you to input your boat and engine information to get a list of recommended propellers based on your specific needs.

By using these websites, you can easily narrow down your options and find the best propeller for your specific needs. Be sure to carefully consider your boat size and weight, intended use, and engine specifications to make an informed decision.

Best Water Temperatures To Catch Marlins in Cabo San Lucas And What They Eat

Cabo San Lucas, located on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, is a world-renowned fishing destination known for its abundant marine life and stunning scenery. Three of the most prized game fish found in the region are the striped marlin, black marlin, and blue marlin. Understanding the ideal water temperature and what these fish eat is critical for any angler hoping to land one of these prized fish.

Best Water Temperatures To Catch Marlins in Cabo San Lucas And What They Eat

Striped marlins are typically found in tropical and subtropical waters and are most commonly caught off the coast of Cabo San Lucas between the months of November and March. During this time, the water temperatures in the region are usually in the range of 70-75 degrees Fahrenheit, which is considered to be the perfect temperature for finding striped marlins. When the water temperature is within this range, striped marlins are more active and will be more likely to chase baitfish, making them easier to catch. Striped marlins are known to congregate in large numbers during this time of year, so anglers who target this species during the winter months will have a good chance of hooking a trophy-sized fish.

Best Water Temperatures To Catch Marlins in Cabo San Lucas And What They Eat

Black marlins are typically found in warmer waters, and the ideal water temperature range for finding black marlins in Cabo San Lucas is between 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit. Black marlins are known for their incredible size and strength, and they can be found offshore throughout the year. During the summer months, when water temperatures are in the higher range, black marlins are more active and will be more likely to feed. Black marlins primarily feed on a variety of baitfish, including mackerel, bonito, and squid.

Blue marlins are also typically found in warm waters, and the ideal water temperature range for finding blue marlins in Cabo San Lucas is between 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit. Blue marlins are known for their incredible size and speed, and they can be found offshore throughout the year. Like black marlins, blue marlins are more active during the summer months when water temperatures are in the higher range. Blue marlins primarily feed on larger baitfish such as tuna, mackerel, and squid.

If you’re an angler looking for a reliable and accurate way to track water temperatures for fishing, SatFish is a tool you should definitely consider. SatFish is a web-based service that provides real-time satellite images and sea surface temperature data for various fishing locations around the world. This service is especially useful for anglers looking to target specific species of fish that have particular temperature preferences.

Best Water Temperatures To Catch Marlins in Cabo San Lucas And What They Eat

In addition to water temperature and food sources, other environmental factors can also play a significant role in the behavior of marlins. Factors such as water clarity, baitfish concentrations, and ocean currents can all affect the movement patterns of marlins, and skilled anglers will need to take these factors into account when planning their fishing strategy.

Anglers looking to find marlins in Cabo San Lucas should also consider hiring a local guide or charter service with experienced captains who are familiar with the local waters and fishing conditions. These guides will have the expertise and knowledge to help anglers locate the best fishing spots and increase their chances of success.
