Cabo San Lucas is the ultimate tourist destination. Beautifully breath-taking beaches, surrounded by white, gorgeous sand.

It’s an amazing place that is a miniature wonderland for anglers. Known as the world’s striped marlin capital, it’s a must-visit place for fishing enthusiasts.

But there’s more to the beautiful resort city than just water-based sports. It’s full of life, brimming with people who have unique stories to tell. The city is encompassed in culture and history, and an incredulous nightlife for those who love to stay awake in the darkness of the night.

But it’s famous for its deep fishing. Tourists who are enthusiastic about learning to fish will find the city to be friendly and helpful. There are plenty of fishing lessons available and the locals are more than willing to help out.

Whale Watching: An Incredible Experience

Even if you’re not a fan of fishing, there’s plenty to do in Cabo San Lucas. One of the most popular activities is whale watching. You can even spot whales during winters. Some species like to come to the waters of the beaches because they raise their offspring in warm waters.

Plenty of Fish in the Sea

As mentioned earlier, Cabo San Lucas is the hub for anglers. It’s full of different species of fish. From trout to striped marlin and yellow-tin tuna, there’s plenty you will be able to catch!

On top of that, if you’re new to fishing and want to learn about the types of fish out there, there are tourist guides available. The overall experience is fun, exciting and adventurous.

It’s also a great chance to learn aquatic behavior. By observing fish, you can learn not only about their species but how they move and interact with their environment.

Hire a Charter

If you really want to get into the depth (pun-intended!) of fishing, charter a yacht! Charters know all the tricks of the trade and provide necessary equipment used for sportfishing. They also which areas you’ll be able to catch more fish.

All you have to do is prepare your fishing rod, kick back and relax. You can leave the chartering to the captain while you fish in the Pacific Ocean!

Sport Fishing Tips for Beginner Anglers

Sport Fishing Tips for Beginner Anglers

Cabo fishing charters
Sport fishing is one of the most popular sports in the world and according to statistics, 69 percent anglers are male. That means women enjoy this as much as their counterpart.
While fishing may look daunting at first, it’s pretty simple. You need the right tools and ingredients and you’ll be on your way to a journey full of excitement, adventure, and relaxation.
All you need to do is learn about knots, rods, baits, and the techniques of catching fish and you’ll be an expert! But remember that fishing isn’t just about catching a big one. It’s about spending time with friends and family, connecting with them through a passion you share in common. It can be one of life’s greatest pleasures.
Here are a few things to keep in mind during your first fishing trip:

All About Equipment

Here’s what you should know about equipment/gear:

Hooks:

While hooks come in different sizes and styles, it’s important to keep in mind that they must be sharp and effective. The size of your hook will also depend on the type of fish you’re trying to catch. Striped marlin and trout are different from each other and therefore, the hook used for them will be different.

You can ask fellow anglers who are more seasoned for advice.

Line:

When it comes to lines, remember that the larger the size, the stronger the line is. A six-pound test line is strong and flexible but a 12-pound test line is better. However, it’s important that you match your line to your rod and reel’s capabilities.

Heavier lines aren’t as useful in catching fish and only work for certain types of species. This is because heavy lines are visible to fish.

Sinkers:

Sinkers act as weights for your bait. They take your bait down into deep waters and hold it there for fish to bite.

Bobbers:

Bobbers let you know when you’ve caught a big catch. They also help keep the sinkers in place and the bait down in the water.

A Few Tips to Keep in Mind

Keep Extra Bait: Keep extra bait with you go on a fishing trip. Since this will be your first time, you’ll end up making a few is takes. That’s no reason to worry though. Practice makes perfect and keeping extra can help.

Plan Your Time: The problem with fishing in the ocean is that marine life is always on the move. Therefore, as soon as you throw in the bait, time your movements. As soon as the fish bites the bait, make your move.

Check the Fishing Regulations: This is extremely important. Make sure to read the fishing regulations of the area you are fishing in. This will help you know whether the bait you’ve caught is legal.

Cabo fishing report September 7th 2017

We finally got to go fishing a few days after helping our community as much as we could to get back on track after the impact of the Cyclone Lidia.

The Anglers that were originally scheduled to fish with us these past few days were not able to fly into town due to bad weather, so we got on board Tailcheaser 45ft Cabo flybridge for 3 days to check if the fishing grounds were still producing as much as they were before the big storm strike our town.

On the first day we went in search of the blue water on the sea of Corte. Since the water in shore has been dark green and cloudy, we started by going out to the horse shoe bank. Once we got there, the water changed to a nice blue color, and so we started trolling some lures along with teasers to rise some marlins.

After a few hours we caught and released a sail fish, right after that we made the decision to look for dolphins to catch yellowfin tunas. We stated trolling a bit faster with cedar plugs looking out into the ocean with binoculars in search of birds or dolphins. Thats how we spent about 5 hours without any luck. Since it started getting dark we decided to change our course heading towards Cabo, but still trolling and searching for the dolphins with out losing fate.

It got to the point where we got all the lines out of the water and started running back home, but on our way back we saw a big school of dolphins feeding so the Captain Julian Liquidano guided the boat to the front of the school while Captain Jobe got a live bait and cast it right in front of the school. Not even a minute after he cast the live bait PUUM! We get a real strong strike and the fight was on.

Chuck Beaker and Valerie Hudson took turns for about 45 minutes to reel in a 229 pound yellowfin tuna with a small Shimano Talika 16 that had a 50 pound test line with an 80 pound test leader.

So in our three fishing day trips, we managed to catch a few small yellowfin tunas, a few good size dorados, we caught and released 2 sailfish, 3 blue marlins, 2 striped marlins and we scored big with the 229 pound yellowfin tuna.

The water inshore has been getting better every day, so we predict that with in a week or so it will be great for dorados and tunas.

Preparing for Deep Sea Fishing Adventure in Cabo – What You Need to Know

So you’ve chartered a luxury yacht and are all set to sail for your sport fishing adventure in Cabo San Lucas! Whether it’s your very first time or your tenth time, it’s crucial to go over a checklist of all you’re going to bring, and keep in mind what to expect.

The Essentials

You’re going to be spending a considerable amount of time out on the yacht; bearing that in mind, here are some of the essentials you won’t want to forget to pack:

  • Sunscreen: You’re going to be spending a lot of time out in the sun, so give your skin the protection it deserves!
  • Hat: A hat will keep the sun out of your eyes, particularly when it’s time to catch some game.
  • Medicine: Seasickness is an issue that might arise, so pack up that Dramamine for when you might not be feeling too hot. Other essential pain medication is also recommended just in case.
  • Camera: You’ve got to have something to capture all those fond memories with!
  • Cash: You’re likely to need to purchase bait or pay other fees and tips.
  • Snacks: The yacht will have its own, but you’re free to bring your own stash.
  • Ice Chest: You’re going to need something to keep the fish you catch in once it’s time to head back in your car.
  • Fishing License: Every individual over the age of 12 needs to have a fishing license in Mexico, so don’t forget this very important document!

What to Leave Behind

Don’t go troubling yourself with things you really don’t need to bring along! Things like all the basic fishing gear is certainly something that the charter sport fishing vessel will provide, and the kind of fish you’ll be dealing with will be taken into consideration in this regard. From rods to navigation technologies, your yacht charter service will be able to provide all you need.

The Right Wardrobe

Don’t forget to dress appropriately! Layering is ideal in this scenario, as it can get much cooler on the open seas than it is on land. Weather is also a factor to take into consideration—you never know what kind of turn it might take, so it’s best to be as prepared as possible.

Take along a hoodie or a sweatshirt for warmer temperatures, but if the weather is going to be cooler, then it’s best to get some more layers to cover up with. Ideally, your shoes should be full coverage ones, so leave those flip flops behind! Deck boots or rain boots are really the best option.

Los Cabos region is known for its spectacular fishing opportunities, and a getaway on those sparkling waters is bound to be any fishing enthusiast’s idea of a real good time. If you’re interested in angling in Los Cabos, then read on to find out a few of the common deep sea fish you’re likely to encounter.

Sportfishing in Cabo

 Blue Marlin

The largest of all Marlin fish, the Blue Marlin is quite the aggressive species. These fish can go up to more than 1000 pounds. Of course, for fly-fishing, you would ideally go for somewhere between 50 to 200 pound Blue Marlins.

Sail Fish

Easily one of the speediest fish in the ocean, these sail fish can jump out of the water at speeds of more than 68 mph.

They are usually found in spots far from shore but near the surface of the water. Why are they called sail fish? That would be due to their dorsal fin, which stretches out along the length of their bodies. This fin is also considerably higher as compared to the thickness of their bodies.

Striped Marlin

Cabo San Lucas is considered to be the epicenter when it comes to finding Striped Marlin in the waters. They tend to be around all year in Los Cabos, and can put on quite the display when they eject themselves out of the water and into the air. To many angling enthusiasts, this is the ideal billfish!

Swordfish

The swordfish are easily identifiable due to their sword-like, long and flat bill. They are a predatory fish, and can prove to be quite the enjoyable challenge for avid anglers. With considerable speed and admirable agility, the swordfish is a pretty mean catch, and uses its “sword” to slash its victims. Length-wise, they can come up to about 9.8 feet, and are usually found near the surface of the water.
