Deep Blue Mexican Sea: All You Need to Know

If you’re a fan of sport fishing, then Cabo San Lucas is definitely the best spot to be at! But before you plan your expedition across the sea, make sure you know everything about the deep Mexican waters so that you get the most out of this experience.

What to bring

Make a list of things you’ll need on your fishing trip, taking into account everything from the equipment you’ll use to the clothing you’ll wear.

Cabo San Lucas is an ideal fishing spot but with the wrong fishing gear, you can’t accomplish much.

Wear a long-sleeved shirt to protect your arms from getting sunburned and adorn a wide brimmed hat. Keeping an extra pair of sweater or jacket is also a good idea in case it gets chilly at the sea. And of course, don’t forget to wear sunblock!

As for the fishing equipment, you will need additional hooks for your fishing rod and plenty of bait. Plastic worms are a good option if you prefer not to use live bait. Just make sure you have enough to last your trip!

Species found

Before you set out to sail, you should get a thorough knowledge about what kind of fish exactly would you be fishing for, and where you can find them.

The deep seas of Los Cabos are home to a range of species of fish, including swordfish, sailfish, and blue and striped marlins which make it a popular site for deep sea fishing. When fishing in these waters, keep in mind what fishing specifications and techniques you need to be careful of to lure in the catch most effectively. Be wary of the rocks and reefs; those are the best spots!

Setting the bait

Choosing the right bait and preparing your hook on time can set the outcome for you. Fishing is a slow and patient process, so don’t hurry up in the beginning and risk warding off potential catch. Live bait consisting of small fish such as anchovies and sardines works best in most cases, but don’t bait your hook too early. In order to attract bigger fish the bait must be lively, so dangling it on your hook early on will do you no good and will result in the fish dying too soon. If you are using squid, however, you can bait your hook early.
