Facts about Dorado
Dorado’s scientific name is Coryphaena Hippurus, as the name suggests, it’s known for its size. Dorado is also known as Mahi Mahi in Mexico and Dolphinfish too. It’s a fast-growing, widely distributed fish that’s resilient to fishing pressures, making it the top sportfishing game. That’s why it’s called Mahi Mahi in Mexico as it means “very strong.”
Dorado is also a brightly colored fish. Its wings are a brilliant blue with a golden edge. The fish changes color, but turns yellow-gray when it dies.
Dorado fishing tips
Dorado tackle
Since Dorado is known to be quite heavy, you need to be particular about the reel you use. A reel that isn’t strong enough won’t be useful in catching Dorado. A Shimano Trinidad 16N is an example of a reel that can be used when fishing Dorado. The Daiwa Sealine 20 and Shimano Calcutta 400 are also great alternatives.
Sometimes, it might take a long cast and live bait, like an anchovy to catch the fish. When doing so, you require skill since there’s little to no weight.
Dorado techniques
Dorado is an open water species of fish. When fishing in Cabo San Lucas, keep an eye out for logs floating on the water, Dorado is more likely to be swimming around such debris in the water. You can increase your chances of catching a Dorado by fishing from a yacht, in comparison to fishing from shore.
