Dos and Don’ts of Deep Sea Fishing

Fishing requires a lot of patience and inexperienced anglers who have no guidance can lose faith in this exciting hobby/pastime because of lack of results. Fishing can be technical; you’ve to find a right spot, choose the right bait and without making a noise, wait patiently for the fish to bite.

If you make a wrong move throughout this process, no fish is going to fall for your trap.

Here is a list of some dos and don’ts of deep sea fishing, use these tips to become a better angler.

The Dos

Bright lures

Fish tend to fall for lures that are bright in color and look fresh. Therefore, avoid buying excessive numbers of lures when you visit the store. Rinse and dry the used lures before safely keeping them in your tackle box.

Follow the signs

Fishing requires a lot of intuition. Bird gliding over the water surface is a clear sign that there is small fish swimming just below the surface. These small fishes aren’t your target; the presence of small fish indicate that big game-fish is lurking deeper within the area. Use these signs to fish in the right location.

Moreover, areas with debris or floating wood also attract big fishes. In some cases, you might even find dolphins swimming near floating wooden planks.

Finding tuna

It’s always recommended you read up on the fishes that you’re looking for. This way, you will know their likely habitat, the type of bait they like, and how to catch them. If you’re on the lookout for some tuna, try finding a group of dolphins in the area. Tuna fish usually school with these large game fish.

Circle hook

If you want to improve the hookup ratio of the fish, use a circle hook. This smart hook design has sufficient reverse point and tiny gap, which allows the hook to easily trap the fish. These hooks are better for the fish as well, unlike other hooks that puncture the fish’s gut, circle hooks traps the fish by hooking its lip.

Don’ts

Reel maintenance

Reel maintenance

Avoid placing the reel in its box immediately. Make sure the real is soaked in fresh water for few hours, before making its way to the box. The fresh water strips away all the debris and saltwater content from the real, and ensures that the real stays in top condition for a long time.

Pull the line immediately

Don’t get over excited, when your first fish takes a bite. Give some time for the bait/lure to make its way inside the fish. Wait for the pressure to increase and only then pull the line.

Underestimate live bait

If you want to catch a big fish, live bait is your best option. Don’t disregard it and take good care of the bait by providing it cool water and maintaining its circulation. An aerator can be used to maintain circulation, when incoming water is unavailable. Remember to change the water frequently and keep the temperature cold, as warm water can’t hold sufficient oxygen.
