The easiest of the three species to catch, the weight of a Black Marlin fish varies between 30kgs and 500kgs.
The shiny black color on the fish body is fairly easy to spot and the short dorsal fins are rounded. With the pectoral fins standing upright, they’re easy to fold and snap right off!
Blue Marlin
With a long bill and a high head, the Blue Marlin fish has pointed dorsal fins. The aggressive fish has blue hues and silver shades dotting its body and fins that are visible even after being caught.
Striped Marlin
Distinctive due to its vibrant coloring, the Striped Marlin is long and lean compared to the other two species that are stocky and chunky is size and weight.
The meat of the Striped Marlin is salmon-pink while the Black and Blue Marlin have pale white meat.
How to Catch a Marlin
Keep It Simple
The best advice going forth to catch marlin fish is to keep it simple. Don’t get hooked by the fancy fishing rods and lures. Instead, focus on your technique and you’re good to go!
Quality over Quantity
While selecting the best gear, fishing rod, reel, and equipment, choose high-quality gear and watch as you catch more fish.
Don’t overdo it by packing a handful of spare rods and reels. It’ll only take up space and doesn’t guarantee a successful catch.
Preparation
Prepare to fight for the marlin fish to be reeled into your boat. The aggressive Marlin fish are known to be fighters as they jump, twist, and shake to escape the fishing line.
Understand your equipment and test the reel’s drag system and the pressure required to tame the Marlin.
On The Water
Once you’re out into the sea, throw 3 to 4 lures from the boat to catch the attention of Marlin fish. Don’t overdo it by casting 6 to 7 lines. Instead, wait for the Marlin Fish to approach the boat.
It’ll be much easier to chase the fish once it comes close enough to catch the bait, hook, line, and sinker!
Using Live Baits
It’s advised to use live baits instead of plastic or wooden baits. Natural baits, alive or dead, are used to attract the Marlin and lure it in.
If the wind is messing with your line, hook it to the boat bollard or tie it off the rod tip. This will help rig the bait and lure the Marlin easily.
