Cabo fishing report August 10th 2017

Yesterday we went out fishing onboard our 32ft Striper with Captain Jobe Villabicencio looking for a big blue or black marlin.

Our friend Carlos Gonzales from Fairfield, California came down to Cabo to have a great time with his wife and daughter. After having spent a few days of relaxing and spending quality time with the family, he came onboard with us in search of a monster big game fish!

With the mentality of any pro fishermen, we were looking forward to get a monster fish hook. So we started the day by heading into the local inshore bank were we caught a couple of small yellowfin tunas, a decent dorado, and a couple of bonitas. After that, we headed down towards San Jose del Cabo to the gordo banks, and because the water temperature is around 85 degrees around that area, along with having heard that other anglers were catching big black marlins around that area. So we get there, started trolling a few big lures along with dead bait all the way in the back. After about an hour we get a black marlin striking one of the lures a couple of times, and then vanished back into the ocean. It definitely got our blood pumping and exited to see action around the area were we decided to fish. About 15 minutes later, a small panga fishing around the same area as us got a black marlin hooked and fought that beast for around 30 minutes before the huge black marlin won the battle and got away. Right after that we get a fast and strong strike on one of our lures. We were all happy and hoping that it was a big black marlin, and after fighting it for like 10 minutes we got to see the color. To our surprise, it was a nice big 40 pound wahoo! We were all happy especially, our friend Carlos, since he has never caught a wahoo before and it was actually the biggest fish he has ever caught.

Our weather has gotten even better. The humidity has dropped, wind has been really strong on the pacific side, but the sea of Cortez it has been just like glass.

What we are catching the most is yellowfin tuna and dorado we are catching them 2 miles of from Santa Maria bay. Marlin and wahoo are here as well, but you would have to go out 25+ miles off of shore to find them.

Fishing is great right now down here in Cabo San Lucas. If you have been thinking of fishing down here, now is the time!

Cabo fishing reports August 8th 2017

This summer just keeps getting better and better down here in Cabo San Lucas, MX.

Last month was just great as we caught black marlins, wahoos, dorados, small yellowfin tunas, with some of them being well over 200 pounds, big rooster fish, sierras and a few sail fish.

This first week of August was just as great as last month, if not even better. We fished 5 days out of the 8 in different boats within our fleet and it was great every single day.

One of the days we went out looking for black and blue marlin around the San Jaime bank. We got to the bank around 8am, and as soon as we got there we began trolling a few big luhrs, two dredges and a dead bait way in the back. After about 25 minutes, we heard the shimano reel go off, we looked back and saw a big blue marlin jumping out of the water and instantly knew the fight was on. Since we saw the hook right on the side of its mouth, my good friend Chuck Baker got on the fighting chair and fought the blue marlin for about 20 minutes, once the marlin got right to the boat we unhooked and then released it without getting it out of the water. After that first catch, we started trolling again, but a friend of ours found a dead sea turtle floating about 20 miles from us and it had a huge school of dorados feeding, so we got all the lines out of the water and headed that way. We got to the spot and just like he said, there was a big school of dorados all around the dead turtle. We started trolling live bait, but they didn’t seem to be interested too much on it so we started chumming dead bait and that really set them off. The fight was back on! At the end of the day we caught 12 dorados, released 4 of them because they were too small, and we also released the blue marlin.

The other days were just as good, and have been catching a lot of yellowfin tunas by finding the dolphins, trolling cedar plugs and flying the kite with a rubber flying fish. We have been catching and releasing plenty of striped marlin by trolling lures, dredges and dead bait and within the same areas. This same strategy has been great for catching dorados too.

The weather has been great with our highest being around the 90s and low 80s and a bit humid, but once you are out on the ocean, the breeze feels so good you’ll want to stay all day out there.

The water temperature is 78 degrees in shore and 82 degrees off shore (degrees Fahrenheit)

The wind is about 4kt to 8kt that is actually really good for fishing.

Cabo fishing report July 26th 2017.

The weather has been great. A bit humid, but overall temperature-wise has steadily been around the 80s (℉)

Wind has been great around 5kt which makes the wakes nice and calm as well. The water temperature has been in the 70s (℉) in shore and 80s 5 miles off of shore.

With all this perfect fishing weather, all the big game fish such as blue, black and striped marlin have been closer to our shores and we are also catching plenty of small yellowfin tuna with a few over 100 pounds here and there. Dorados have been getting into our local banks as well in small numbers, but they are nice and big.

This week we release plenty of striped marlin from around the 95 bank to the 1150, we also found a lot of dolphins around the same areas and with them lots of small yellowfin tunas and some dorados in small numbers but good size, we saw a couple of swordfish out there as well but didn’t get them to take our bait.

In shore fishing it’s still really good with rooster fish and sierras around el tule and Solmar.

The weather has been a bit humid and hot with winds in between 5 to 11kt so it feels really good fishing out there, So if you are heading down to Cabo San Lucas and you are a sport fishing person, you should really go fishing.

Now it’s a perfect time with high % of success every day.

If you are that Angler chasing big yellowfin tunas! now is the time to do so.

The big monster yellowfin tunas have moved in to our local banks, Several 200 pound plus tunas were caught yesterday.

We are still catching plenty of striped marlin, dorados and small yellowfin tunas.

Weather has been great for the last week, during the day it’s around 85 F and at night 75F.

Wind conditions are in between 3kt to 6kt so the ocean is nice and smooth.

Book your fishing trip and go after that big tuna you have been wanting to catch.

WEATHER: Really windy some days out of this past week, In general we cant complain about the weather at all, it has been really nice and sunny about every day. The wind has picked up pretty good over the last 3 days, though with some pretty good gusts during the day time and even at night. As I sit and write this report I can hear the wind blowing now. If you were in a small boat over the last 2 or 3 days you will have experienced a pretty rough ride due to windy conditions. The actual temperatures are really great with highs in the ladder 80, is too low 90, so in the day time and cooling off pretty good at night down into the mid 60’s.

WATER: With the windy conditions the water has been pretty wild with some rough seas on the pacific side and of course on the Sea of Cortez its been calmer, but due to the windy conditions its rough out there. Still quite the contrast in water temperatures from the Pacific to the Sea of Cortez. All warm water on the Cortez side and cold water on the Pacific side. It is 69 degrees up above the Finger Bank on the Pacific side and on the Cortez side it is pushing 79 degrees.

BILLFISH: Marlin have kida showed up late this year, they should have been here a couple months ago, like in February, but it looks as they are showing now in good numbers. Looks as if most Marlin are wanting to bite Ballyhoo as we have been scoring using the Ballys. The Marlin fishing has been pretty steady and it seems the Marlin have moved down towards the 1150 and Santa Maria areas, and from about 1 to 3 miles offshore. What we are seeing is many of the Marlin are full of squid as there is an abundance in the water. So we have been just pitching live bait at them till we find the right one to take the bait. Most of our boats have been fishing about everyday and we are averaging about one to two marlin per trip, so it isn’t too bad, actually pretty steady.

DORADO: Just isn’t happening right now for Dorado! we catch one here and there and not very day.

WAHOO: I have not heard of any this past week. Not too much Wahoo action right now.

TUNA: We are still catching a few Tuna this past week and have had some good days like one day we got like 6 decent size Tuna doing some Kite fishing, but basically we are averaging maybe 3 to 4 per trip. Most Tuna are 12 to 35lbs and along with Kite fishing we are using cedar plugs and king busters. The San Jamie Banks is the hot spot for the Tuna, so head that direction if you are going out for them.

INSHORE: Big Sierras being landed on live bait, and we are seeing action from the Solmar to the Pump House, using hootchies also. Rooster fish action in close to shore has been pretty good over the last few weeks If you use live bait you will have a good chance of landing a big one. We have been catching them by El Tule and also in the same area as the Roosters are the Sierra and it’s pretty wide open in the same areas. The Roosters are active and biting good. Jigging iron and trolling rapalas at the Margarita Rock Piles has been really productive for Yellowtail and Amberjack. There are some nice size Grouper being caught on chunk bait in the rocks off of Solmar.

The combined panga fleets launching out of La Playita, Puerto Los Cabos Marina sent out approximately 60 charters for the week, with anglers reporting a fish count of: 9 striped marlin, 29 yellowfin tuna, 11 amberjack, 14 yellow snapper, 8 barred pargo, 16 leopard grouper, 5 pompano, 22 huachinango, 14 roosterfish, 19 sierra, 8 bonito and 210 triggerfish.
