The weather conditions impact fishing in a multitude of ways. The wind, in particular, drives the catch onto the shoreline, making on-shore fishing easier. At the same time, water temperature also plays an important role. It affects the depth and the places within the water body that the fish are most comfortable at. As far as barometric pressure is concerned, it affects the availability of food for the fish. For instance, for some species, the availability of feed increases right before a cold front and reduces after a storm hits.
This is the reason most fishing enthusiasts plan their trips according to the season. Here’s a bit of guidance to help you plan your next trip to Cabo San Lucas:
March—the time of a stronger bottom bite
March is right around the corner and so is the ideal fishing season. During the month of March, the temperature in Cabo San Lucas is mildly warm, with the wintertime cold gone and the summertime storms still far away. The humidity is also moderate with little precipitation. There are some winds and cold water pouring onto the grounds occasionally.
During March, the marlin bite slows down but this is compensated with a stronger bottom bite. The cabrilla, snapper, large sea bass, and grouper become increasingly common around this time. By the end of the month, striped marlin also starts surfacing. As far as yellow fin tuna is concerned, you may be lucky to catch some of it by the beginning of the month, but the catch drops off toward March end.
April—the month of ideal precipitation
Just like March, Cabo San Lucas also sees minimum rainfall in April—making it an ideal time to fish. The temperature goes up to mid-80s and the lower humidity averages at 60%. These are excellent conditions for fishing since light rain makes an ideal ground for fishing. It blurs the water surface and makes it hard for the catch to see you.
This is the time when the offshore fishing produces the best of dorado bite and strong striped marlin bite. As far as inshore fishing is concerned, the most common catch is the yellow tail, smaller dorado, ship jack, and Spanish mackerel.
May and summertime fishing fun
The average precipitation in Cabo San Lucas is equal to 0.01 in May while the temperature ranges between 62 and 86.
If you’re planning your visit to Cabo San Lucas around this time, make sure you’ve got your summer shades and sunblock stocked up. As the water heats up, the number of marlins also increases. This is also the time when bigger fishes start hitting the deck, compared to March and April. Even the number of rooster fish that hit the decks is more than the same for March and April.
