Yellowfin Tuna Fishing at Punta Gorda

Finding the Perfect Spot

The first step in our yellowfin tuna adventure is locating the ideal fishing spot. We rely on state-of-the-art electronics SIMRAD to identify areas with significant activity. These tools are invaluable in pinpointing where the fish are feeding, saving time and increasing our chances of a successful catch.

Gear Up for Success

Our choice of equipment is crucial. For this expedition, we use:

  • Bait: Large squids, cut into smaller pieces. Squid is an irresistible bait for yellowfin tunas, and its scent and texture make it the perfect lure.
  • Leader: A 60-pound fluorocarbon leader offers the strength and invisibility needed to trick these wary fish.
  • Hook: A small circular hook, number 3, is ideal for ensuring a good hook-up without being too intrusive.

The Technique: Precision and Patience

With our boat positioned over the chosen spot, we assess the direction of drift. This understanding is vital for effectively chumming with squid. Our goal is to have our bait drift naturally with the current, descending to the 250ft depth where the tunas are likely swimming.

The key technique here is free spooling our reels. This method allows the bait to sink slowly and mimics the natural movement of prey, making it more appealing to the tuna. It’s a game of patience and precision – getting the bait to descend at just the right speed and depth is an art in itself.

Persistence Pays Off

Catching yellowfin tuna is a test of endurance and skill. Adjustments may be needed as conditions change and as we learn more about the behavior of the fish on that particular day. This fishing strategy requires a lot of patience and persistence, but the thrill of hooking a big-grade yellowfin tuna makes it all worthwhile.

Whether you’re an experienced angler or new to the sport, this technique for catching yellowfin tuna is both challenging and rewarding. It’s a perfect blend of science, skill, and patience.
